Koblenz

May 29, 2014  (15 years today for Randal and me!)
The Main River (pronounced mine) with one more lock to go today, Right Now!
Germany
Since we left Ehrenbreitstein/Koblenz we’ve stopped at St Goar and Bingen, both charming places.  We hope to spend tonight in Frankfurt.
But now to prepare for the lock.

Oberwinter

Upriver from Koblenz
Guten Morgen,
We spent the evening of the 24th at Oberwinter.  It doesn’t get better than the evening we spent there.

Oberwinter !
I’ve not been able to find anything about Oberwinter, but that’s fine.  The folks we met there are much more important than anything we saw or could have read.

I looked up […]

Cologne 1

Guten Morgen,
“Germany is a country for which Jews have a very visceral reaction.”
http://www.obermayer.us/german/german_conscience.htm
During our travels I’ve made attempts in several countries to seek out the “Jewish presence.”   I visited synagogues in Singapore, England  and India and while in New Delhi attended a Friday night service with Jewish cruiser friends Linda and Michael on B’Sheret.  I’ve […]

River Passage from Papendrecht to Germany

The Piet Hein the ship reminded me of Piet Hein who, among other accomplishment wrote Grooks.  Though that Piet Hein was Danish, not Dutch though I’m not absolutely sure where this ship is from.

Passage from Vlissingen

Goedenavond,
Tonight we are 3 stops away from Vlissingen in Tiel at a lovely yacht club for the night.  We traveled 60 kilometers from Papendrecht today with lots of current slowing us to a 4 knot average.  Lots of barge traffic also.  Tomorrow we may reach the Rhine and enter Germany.  Writing these emails has […]

Follow us on Google Earth

FYI
If you want to follow along with us on Google Earth, here is the link that shows where we have been but also gives you an idea of where we will be going.  We are on our way to Germany and the Rhine.  We should be there in a few days.

Middelburg part 1

Goedenavond,
We finally left Vlissingen May 13th and made it part way to Papendrecht.  We tied up overnight just along the water way sharing space with lots of water birds which was wonderful.  Today we made into Papendrecht and were helped into the only space possible for us at this small yacht club.  Everyone […]

Leaving Vlissingen Finally!

Goedemorgen,

Two photos are worth a day’s work!  Several days actually with lots of waiting for the wind to stop in-between.  The paravane stabilizing arms came down several days ago but we had to wait for the wind to totally stop before the mast could be safely taken down.  Yesterday the wind stopped and the […]

National Mill (Windmill) Day

Goedenavond,
It is 7:45 pm and the sun is till high in the sky.  We hung laundry out to dry at 5 pm and the sun and wind are still working at drying several pairs of jeans.  Quite amazing.
Yesterday was the Sunday of National Mill Day weekend.  I browbeat everyone into going out into […]

Horses Trucks Sheep and Ducks. and a Train. And a Lobstah

Goedenavond,
It’s 9:13 pm but still quite light out.  We walked about 7 miles today and have an early day tomorrow so everyone will cash in their chips and be asleep before dark.  Remember when you had to do that as a kid and hated it?  The wind has been fierce the past several days […]
