Heading North, once again….

I’m sad to report that we’ve gone as far south as we will this spring, unfortunately….we have happy family obligations (a wedding in early June) that bring us back, and so we will use the upcoming summer to complete boat work that we’re contemp…

Bless Up!

Keith, Watusi and Ron before our tourThis morning Keith, Ron and I were all moving a bit slowly (a la “why is the rum gone?”) but thankfully, we’d arranged a tour of Nevis with Watusi, a, extremely tall Nevisian Rastafarian singer/taxi driver. He…

Landfall: Nevis!

We left Basseterre anchorage just after 7:00 in the morning under blue skies and the usual trades blowing 15-20 knots. It was an easy run down to Nevis, the smaller sister in this twin island nation. The island is verdant and green, with steep hills. C…

Exploring St. Kitt’s

We walked about downtown Basseterre this morning, checking out the older town area around the Circus with the intention of going to Stone Walls, a highly recommended cafe, for lunch. However, it was Tuesday, and we discovered that Stone Walls is closed…

Moving on to St. Kitt’s

Actually, the island is named St. Christopher’s, by Columbus who named it after his patron saint. (How modest of him, really.) But everyone knows the place simply as St. Kitt’s! To recap our recent moves, this morning we cleared out with Statian Custom…

A bit of interesting Statia history

Remaining bits of walls from the old warehousesNow for something completely different! How about some info about Statia? They  really have a lot of significant history for such a tiny island! During the 1700s, the major European countries were at …

Hiking the Quill

Beginning of the trail from Lower TownToday, Ron and I decided to do something land-based, and got a trail map and trail tags from the STENAPA (St. Eustatius National Park) Nature Center so that we could hike “The Quill”, the dormant volcano here o…

Flopper Stoppers Deployed

Flopper Stoppers are deployed!

Today was maintenance day. The morning started with Ron doing the 12kw genset oil change, oil filter change, and impeller change. We also changed out the impellers on the main engines, as they were due per our maintenance schedule….although, as Murphy’s Law would have it, the old impellers looked great and Ron was kicking himself for having changed them too soon. Yes, it’s a boat…! I know it doesn’t sound like much work, but it’s never a 5-minute job! The real mystery is how can engine manufacturers place impeller pumps so that there is never quite enough clearance whatsoever to pull out the old impeller and insert the new? Do they not realize that the impellers need to be changed regularly?

Diving in Statia again!

This morning we went out with Glenn, one of the owner of Golden Rock Divers, and enjoyed two really nice scuba dives. The first dive was at the Charles L. Brown, a 300’ former AT&T cable-laying ship that was purposefully sunk as a reef in 2003. B…

Sint Eustatius!

A dismal rainy day – somewhat unusual in the islands, I think, since most rain comes in short showers rather than all-day-long affairs. We each managed to work out on the bike trainer in the early a.m. before the rains started in earnest though! Happ…
